My Top 10 sources for gamedev assets

As a solo indie game developer I do not have the luxury of choosing all the assets that I need or want. Even though I am able to create basic 3D and 2D art, this is not really practical in most cases. If I want to quickly prototype an idea or game mechanics I cannot spend hours or days on making specific gamedev assets.

This is why I absolutely love using various game dev asset stores and sites. Even when I am not working on anything I still visit those sites from time to time to see what’s available. Below is a list of sites I use on a regular basis.

Important note: always read the terms of use and licenses when downloading assets for your games. Especially when you want to monetize your work.

  • Unity Asset Store – the main repository of free and paid content for Unity. You can find all sorts of stuff there. From models, textures and special effect, through additional function, to whole systems and frameworks for making games.
  • Unreal Marketplace – just like the Unity Asset Store, but for Unreal.
  • GameDevMarket – an engine-independent site full of free and paid resources like graphics, sounds and music.
  • itch.io – site for hosting indie games, but also contains a repository of great gamedev assets.
  • Open Game Art – all game art on this site can be used in projects, even commercial ones.
  • DevAssets – a gamedev assets store created by a very popular YouTube channel called Brackey’s.
  • Game Art 2D – royalty-free 2D game assets, including some freebies.
  • Terrain Party – a website that allows you to export real-world terrain maps to use in the Unit terrain editor. Maybe a tutorial for this would be in order?
  • Mixamo – Adobe’s site with rigged character models and animations. Both models and animations may be exported to Unity and Unreal.
  • Incompetech – awesome site with great royalty free music by Kevin Macleod.
